“I have spent decades helping people to recognise their skills, building confidence to deliver their goals and achieve results.”

"

Having worked across three continents and in various sectors, I have come to realise the importance of healthy relationships. I am motivated by connection and seeing people flourish, whatever their circumstances.

I have spent decades helping people to recognise their skills, building confidence to deliver their goals and achieve results. My diverse career has taken me to the charity sector with Compass International Family Center and Oasis Children’s Home, and to corporate settings such as Ford Motor Company and Fluid Interactive. I frequently speak at events and conferences, bringing messages of hope and transformation.

I am a qualified integrative counsellor and psychotherapist, with two degrees – a BA in psychology and international relations, and a BCom in management and human resources. I also have qualifications in project management, training, and facilitation.

I’ve been married for 20 years and have four children. We’ve been fortunate to live overseas, experiencing the richness of many cultures, making connections across the world. I’ve enjoyed leading and building teams that help those in need.

My professional experiences have shown me how to turn around “impossible” situations. I once had a client who was in a very difficult emotional state and rejected my support altogether. She refused to engage with me as her counsellor, ignoring my calls and even going on the attack.

I gave her time, worked from the space she was in, and eventually found a way through. By working relationally to address this rupture in our relationship, we were able to move forward. We worked together for over a year, and she experienced real transformation, understanding herself better and becoming more resilient in her own relationships.

Challenging experiences shape people. The difference we can make when we engage with each other – staying authentic to ourselves, giving dignity to others, and finding shared values – brings lasting change. I am excited to share everything I learned in my own journey through the Relational capability training programme, which has an incredible impact on the way we look at all relationships.

Why relational capability matters

Healthy, effective relationships are key to success in today’s complex world – especially in the social care and support sectors. The quality of your interactions with clients influences everything from engagement to long-term outcomes. This is why relational capability – the ability to form and maintain strong, empathetic connections – is essential for any support worker.

At OnePlusOne, we know that local authorities play a vital role in community wellbeing. This is why we’ve created a comprehensive training programme that not only teaches relational theory, but also gives you the practical tools to apply it in your day-to-day work.

What you'll learn

Our evidence-based programme blends theory with hands-on practice, covering essential relational skills like emotional competence, communication, and mentalisation. Through this training, you’ll:

Understand the science of relationships. Learn the theory behind relational capability and how it can transform your practice.
Build practical skills. Develop the confidence to engage more effectively with clients and colleagues, even in challenging situations.
Improve service user outcomes. Strengthen your ability to connect with clients, leading to more positive interactions and conclusions.

Who is this training for?

This course is designed for any frontline practitioners supporting individuals and families. We have a wide client base, including those working in:

Family hubs
Children’s centres
Early help teams

How the training works

We use a hybrid learning approach. This combines the best of both worlds – interactive, face-to-face workshops and flexible remote sessions. Hybrid learning ensures that you get the immersive learning experience you need, plus the convenience of learning from anywhere.

Day 1. A full-day face-to-face interactive workshop covers core theory and skills.
Day 2. A half-day remote session focuses on reflective practice and real-world application.
Ongoing support. Additional remote resources and follow-up sessions ensure you continue to develop your skills after the course.

The benefits of Relational capability training

By investing in this course, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how to build more meaningful, productive relationships. Here’s how it will positively impact your work:

Better client-centric care. A workforce that prioritises the needs of clients and responds to them relationally.
Improved engagement. Stronger, more effective connections lead to higher levels of service user engagement.
Positive outcomes. Enhanced relationships contribute to improved wellbeing for service users.
Higher retention. Staff feel more confident and capable in their roles, reducing turnover and burnout.

What our clients say about Relational capability training

I’ve done an awful lot of relational sort of training through the early help service, but this training made me more aware, really thinking about the words I use.” – Rachel, Line-Manager Shropshire

I hope this training is taught everywhere and anywhere possible. It’s vital for people to learn about this topic.” – Theresa Cameron, parenting coordinator, London Borough of Sutton

I’m now clearer about how I'm talking to people, really making sure that we both know what to expect and having clear expectations from their side … It's helped build up more trust for us to work better together.” – Zarda, Blackburn with Darwen
